Parallel Bridging Models and Their Impact on Algorithm Design

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the impact of features of parallel computation models on the design of efficient parallel algorithms. For this purpose, we start with considering Valiant’s BSP model and design an optimal multisearch algorithm. For a realistic extension of this model which takes the critical blocksize into account, namely the BSP* model due to Bäumker, Dittrich, and Meyer auf der Heide, this algorithm is far from optimal. We show how the critical blocksize can be taken into account by presenting a modified multisearch algorithm which is optimal in the BSP* model. Similarly, we consider the D-BSP model due to de la Torre and Kruskal which extends BSP by introducing a way to measure locality of communication. Its influence on algorithm design is demonstrated by considering the broadcast problem. Finally, we explain how our Paderborn University BSP (PUB) Library incorporates such BSP extensions.

Design of a Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Parallel Machines Scheduling to Minimize Job Tardiness and Machine Deteriorating Costs with Deteriorating Jobs in a Batched Delivery System
This paper studies the parallel machine scheduling problem subject to machine and job deterioration in a batched delivery system. By the machine deterioration effect, we mean that each machine deteriorates over time, at a different rate. Moreover, job processing times are increasing functions of their starting times and follow a simple linear deterioration. The objective functions are minimizin...

The paper envisions an extension to a standard instruction set which eeciently implements PRAM algorithms using explicit multi-threaded instruction-level parallelism (ILP); that is, Explicit Multi-Threading (XMT), a ne-grained computational paradigm covering the spectrum from algorithms through architecture to implementation is introduced; new elements are added where needed. The more detailed ...
متن کاملBridging the Gap Between Research and Policy and Practice; Comment on “CIHR Health System Impact Fellows: Reflections on ‘Driving Change’ Within the Health System”
Far too often, there is a gap between research and policy and practice. Too much research is undertaken with little relevance to real life problems or its reported in ways that are obscure and impenetrable. At the same time, many policies are developed and implemented but are untouched by, or even contrary to evidence. An accompanying paper describes an innovative progr...
